Daily Sermon on What It Really Means to Follow Jesus | Luke 9:23 Reflection

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” , Luke 9:23

There is something about this verse that does not feel light. It is direct. It cuts through everything we try to hold together on our own.

“Follow Me.”

Then Jesus explains it, and it becomes clearer, but also more demanding.

Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Daily.

Not occasionally. Not when life is calm. Daily.

And that is where the struggle begins, because most of us want Jesus, but we also want control. We want His help, but we still want our own direction in certain areas.

Denying yourself is not about rejecting your life. It is about releasing the need to always be in control. It is that moment where you stop insisting on your way and start asking, “Lord, what are You leading me into.”

Taking up the cross is mostly quiet obedience. Choosing what is right when no one sees it. Staying faithful when compromise feels easier. Holding on to truth even when it costs something.

Following Jesus is not a one time decision. It is a daily return to surrender. A daily choice to trust Him again.

And sometimes that is the hardest part, not the big decisions, but the small daily ones. The quiet moments where you decide whether you will obey or drift. Whether you will pray or delay. Whether you will listen or ignore.

Maybe the real question is not whether you believe in Jesus.

Maybe it is who is actually leading your decisions right now.

There is a difference between asking God to bless your plans and laying your plans down before Him.

And Jesus is not forcing it. He is inviting you.

He Himself lived this completely. He surrendered to the Father fully, even to the cross. And now He calls us to follow Him in the same trust, not alone, but with Him leading us.

So today, it is not about being perfect. It is about being willing.

Willing to follow again. Willing to surrender again. Willing to trust again.

Even in the small things.

Even when it costs something.

And even when you do not feel strong enough for it.

Because strength is not what keeps you close to God. Surrender does.

Lord Jesus, help us to follow You with a sincere heart today. Where we resist, soften us. Where we are distracted, bring us back. Teach us to trust You more than ourselves. We choose You again. Amen.
