When every door has closed and you have run out of options, this is where prayer starts. Not as a last resort. As the first honest word you have said in months.
There is a specific kind of tired that comes from trying everything. You have made the calls. You have asked for help. You have done the math and it does not work. You have talked to the doctor, the lawyer, the counselor, the pastor. You have prayed, though your prayers have started to sound the same.
Now you are sitting in a situation that does not have a solution you can see. That is the part nobody prepares you for. Not the problem itself. The moment you realize you cannot fix it.
Abraham was there. He was ninety-nine years old and God had promised him a son. Paul was there. He wrote about a thorn in his flesh he asked God to remove three times, and God said no (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). The widow in 2 Kings 4 was there. Her husband was dead, the creditor was coming, and she had nothing but a jar of oil.
Scripture is full of people standing at the end of their own resources. What happens next in those stories is worth noticing.
What Scripture Says About Impossible Situations
Jesus said something blunt in Matthew 19:26: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” He was talking about salvation when He said it. The disciples had just asked who could be saved, and Jesus told them nobody could save themselves. That is the frame for everything else.
When Gabriel told Mary she would bear a son, she asked how, since she was a virgin. Gabriel answered, “For no word from God will ever fail” (Luke 1:37). The Greek behind that phrase carries the sense of something that cannot be powerless. It is not a slogan about your career. It is a statement about what God is able to do with what He has promised.
Paul wrote in Ephesians 3:20 about a God “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” Notice the qualifier. According to His power. Not according to your faith level. Not according to how well you prayed.
The Bible does not promise that every hard situation ends the way you want. Paul’s thorn stayed. John the Baptist was executed. Jesus Himself asked for the cup to pass and it did not. What Scripture does promise is that God is present, God is able, and God’s purposes do not fail even when your preferred outcome does.
A Prayer for an Impossible Situation
Lord,
I have run out of ideas. I have tried everything I know to try. I cannot fix this. I cannot even see how it could be fixed.
So I am coming to You with empty hands. Not with a strategy. Not with a plan. Just with the situation itself. You already know what it is. You knew before I did.
I am asking You to do what I cannot do. I am asking for Your intervention. I am asking for something I cannot explain and cannot arrange. I do not know what that would even look like. But You do.
Give me peace while I wait. I am not good at waiting. I want to do something. I want to make calls. I want to force an outcome. Help me to stop and let You work.
If You choose to resolve this, I will be grateful. If You do not, I am asking for grace to keep trusting You anyway. You have been faithful before. You were faithful when I could not see it. I am asking You to be faithful now.
I am handing this to You. I cannot carry it anymore.

A Prayer for When You Have Been Praying for Years
Lord,
I have been praying about this for a long time. Longer than I expected. Longer than I can explain to people who ask. I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix.
I do not want to stop praying. I am not going to stop. But I need You to help me keep going. I need You to keep me from bitterness. I need You to keep my heart soft.
The psalmist wrote that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). I am counting on that. I do not feel near to anything right now. So be near to me.
I still believe You can do this. I am still asking. Even if it takes longer. Even if it does not happen the way I want. I am still here. Still talking to You. Still waiting.
Hold onto me while I wait.

A Prayer for a Situation You Cannot Talk About
Lord,
You know what this is. I cannot explain it to anyone else. There is nobody I can tell. But You already see it. You already know.
I am asking for Your help with something nobody else knows about. I am asking for Your intervention in a place I cannot bring into the light. You know what needs to happen. You know who needs to move. You know what needs to change.
Do what only You can do. Work in the dark where I cannot see. Bring order out of this mess. I am trusting You with it.

A Prayer When God Says No
Lord,
I asked You to fix this. I asked more than once. And it looks like the answer is no. Or at least not yet. I am not happy about that. I want to be honest with You about it.
But I am still here. I am still Yours. I am not walking away.
Paul asked three times and You told him Your grace was enough. I do not fully understand that. I do not know how grace becomes enough when the thing you wanted is gone. But I am asking You to show me.
Help me to trust You when I do not like Your answer. Help me to keep loving You when I do not understand You. Help me to hold onto You when I cannot hold onto the outcome.
You are still good. I am saying that even though I do not feel it right now. I am saying it because it is true whether I feel it or not.

What to Do When Nothing Changes
Prayer is not a technique that produces outcomes on demand. That is worth saying plainly because a lot of Christian writing implies otherwise.
Here are some honest things to hold onto when you have prayed and prayed and the situation has not moved.
Keep praying anyway. Not because your words are magic. Because prayer keeps you connected to God in the middle of the mess. If you stop talking to Him, the situation does not get better. You just get more alone.
Let people help. Paul wrote in Galatians 6:2, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ.” You are not meant to carry this by yourself. Tell someone. Let them pray with you. Let them sit with you. Let them bring dinner.
Watch for the small things. When the big thing does not change, God often shows up in smaller ways. A verse that lands differently. A phone call at the right moment. A night of actual sleep. Do not dismiss those. They are not the answer you wanted, but they are evidence that you are not alone.
Tell God the truth. You do not have to pretend. The Psalms are full of raw complaint. Psalm 13 opens with “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” God can handle your frustration. He would rather have your honesty than your performance.
Stay in Scripture. Not to find the verse that fixes everything. Because Scripture keeps telling the story of a God who shows up in impossible situations, over and over, across centuries. You need that story in your ears when your own situation is telling you a different one.
Get help for your mental health. There is no shame in this. Anxiety and depression are real. If you are not sleeping, if you cannot function, if you are having thoughts of harming yourself, talk to a doctor or a licensed counselor. The Holy Spirit works through medicine and therapy too.
Closing
I do not know what your impossible situation is. I do not know if it will resolve the way you want. I do not know what God is doing in it.
What I know is that He has not walked away. He has not forgotten. He has not run out of ability. And He is not waiting for you to pray the right words before He acts.
Keep bringing it to Him. Keep telling Him the truth. Keep showing up even when nothing seems to change.
He is still able. And He is still with you.
